Fluffy air fryer omelette
There are many ideas of what an omelette should be. Purists will say that an omeltte is thin, smooth, pale yellow (without any specks of brown) and folded in three. That's your classic French omelette.
While I can appreciate the French style omelette, it takes some skill to make it. While cooking, you lift the edges and then tilt the pan to allow the raw egg to run underneath. It's easy to undercook the middle of your omelette when using this method.
Another omelette (or omelet) type is what you typically find in a diner: a homemade scramble style omelette that's thicker, often filled with various ingredients (ham, cheese, mushroom, veggies) and more rustic looking. I find that it's often quite heavy and greasy, which is NOT what I want for breakfast.
Recently I discovered that you can make a killer omelette in the air fryer. All you need is a silicone tray that fits the basket of your air fryer, some cooking spray and 10 minutes. No copious amounts of butter and oil, no lifting edges, no flipping or breaking your omelette. It's SO easy and versatile! Perfect for busy mornings or a no-hassle nutritious lunch.
An air fryer omlelette is technically more like a frittata, where the ingredients are mixed with the egg mixture, rather than folded in the center.

Ingredient notes
-
Eggs: use good quality eggs for best flavor and texture. I recommend local or organic eggs for this recipe.
-
Milk: any milk will work, dairy or plant-based. Water can also be used instead.
-
Cheese: grated cheddar or Monterey Jack will work best
-
Ham: I like to dice it small. I used a slice of baked ham from my local grocery store's deli.
-
Bell Pepper: any color bell pepper will do.
-
Green Onion: or scallions, for extra flavor and color.
-
Cherry Tomatoes: tiny red slices on top of the omelette will bring you joy (plus, they're delicious).
-
Salt and Pepper: to season
How to make an Omelette in the air fryer
- Spray an 8-inch silicone tray with cooking spray.
- In a mixing bowl or glass measuring cup whisk together eggs and a splash of milk (or water). I like to use a fork and whisk it vigorously until frothy (Images 1 & 2). This will introduce air to the mixture make your omelette ultra fluffy.
- Add diced ham, bell pepper, green onions, chopped spinach and grated cheese to the beaten eggs. Season with salt and pepper and mix together (Images 3 & 4).
- Transfer the egg mixture to the prepared silicone tray. Even out with a fork, if neeeded. Top with sliced cherry tomatoes (Image 5).
- Preheat the air fryer for a few minutes to 340 degrees. Take the basket out completely, carefully place the solicone tray inside, place the basket back in the air fryer and air fry for 9-12 minutes (Image 6). Check the omelette after 9 minutes. Lift the egde gently and make sure it's set. If it's still undecooked or if you see any liquid, air fry 2-3 minutes longer until it's fully set.
- Remove the silicone pan out out of the air fryer and place on a plate or a heat proof surface. Gently lift the omelette with a spatula and slide it onto a plate. Be careful not too break it.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Note: my 7-qt Go Wise air fryer basket fits an 8-inch tray comfortably. If your air fryer is smaller, you may need to get a smaller tray and cooking time may need to be adjusted (as the omelette will be thicker).
What to serve it with
Air fried omelette is a complete meal on its own (I like it drizzled with Sriracha) but you can also serve it with delicious sides.
If you're serving it for breakfast, some good sides include:
- sliced avocado
- fresh pico de gallo
- cooked bacon
- your favorite breakfast sausage
- hash browns or breakfast potatoes (home fries)
- whole grain toast
This delicious omelette also works as an easy lunch or dinner, especially with a side salad. Try it with my chopped salad.
Storage & reheating tips
If you have leftover omelette, transfer it to an airtight container and store refrigerated for up to 4 days. To reheat, transfer to a plate and nuke in the microwave for 45 seconds or until hot.
What else can you put in an omelette
You can honestly add almost anything to an omelette to make it your own (or clean up the fridge!). Here are some delicious suggestions:
- Cheese: for a classic cheese omelette, add your favorite grated cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, gouda, parmesan, mozzarella, Colby Jack)
- Mushrooms: to make a savory mushroom omelette, either add finely chopped or thin sliced raw mushrooms to the egg mixture, or cook them in a small pan first.
- Bacon or sausage: if you have some cooked sausage or bacon bits, both will work perfectly.
- Soft cheese: crumbled goat cheese or feta will make your omelette creamy and extra delicious.
- Cooked veggies: if you have any leftover roasted, air fried or grilled veggies, they are a perfect addition to an omelette. Try it with cooked asparagus, broccooli, zucchini, carrot and onions.
- Taco fillings: for a Mexican inspired omelette, add some cooked taco meat, pico de gallo, taco cheese and onions. Serve with a side of guac or salsa.
- Fresh herbs: basil, chives and parsley work best but you can also experiment with fresh thyme, rosemary, tarragon etc.
- Fish: smoked or leftover cooked salmon is an awesome in a morning omelette. Drained canned tuna will also work.
- Egg whites: instead of whole eggs, you can use liquid egg whites. An egg white omelette is a great low-calorie, low-cholesterol option. I usually go with ⅓ cup of liquid egg whites and 1 whole egg for a healthy breakfast option.
Recipe FAQs
Whisking the egg mixture with a fork or a small whisk introduces air and results in a nice, perfectly fluffy omelette. Make sure to whisk it vigorously for at least 20 seconds, or longer. You want the mixure to look frothy on top. Do this BEFORE adding any solid ingredients.
Yes, you can. I like using silicone trays the best because they are fexible and it's easy to remove the omelette and transfer it onto a plate. If you have a small cake pan, especially a spring form, just make sure to spray with oil generously or else the omelette will stick to the pan. Some cooks use paper liners and while that method will work, I find it too messy.
Honestly, it doesn't matter so much. I usually add low-fat milk or water although technically adding cream will give you a creamier omelette. It depends on individual taste preferences.
Yes, you can. Just place the silicone tray directly on the rack.
