Cottage Cheese Taco Dip
Ever since I made my high protein Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip, I’ve been wanting to give the same "secret ingredient" treatment to another of my favorites, the taco dip.
I blended cottage cheese with a little salsa and my homemade taco seasoning and vila! The dip turned out creamy and delicious.
This version is higher protein version of classic taco dip that’s normally made with a sour cream and cream cheese combo. It’s lower in fat too, but definitely not in flavor. This delicious dip comes together in mere minutes and is also easily customizable - layer it with whatever taco toppings you like. It’s great for parties, gatherings and game night.
Ingredient notes
- Cottage cheese - Whole milk or low-fat, large or small curd, doesn't matter. It’s getting blended.
- Taco seasoning - you can use the stuff from the packet or make your own easy homemade taco seasoning in just a couple minutes.
- Salsa - use your favorite brand and level of spice.
- Iceberg lettuce - shredded
- Tomatoes - halved cherry tomatoes or chopped roma (or any kind) tomatoes
- Black olives - sliced
- Mexican blend, Monterey Jack cheese or cheddar cheese - shredded
- Avocado - diced small, make sure it's ripe
- Cilantro - chopped (optional)
How to make Cottage Cheese Taco Dip
- Step 1: Blend the cottage cheese with the salsa and taco seasoning in a food processor or blender until a completely smooth and creamy texture is achieved.
- Step 2: Transfer the blended cottage cheese mixture to a shallow serving dish, such as a shallow bowl or pie plate.
- Step 3: Top the dip with veggies like shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, black olives, shredded cheddar cheese, avocado and garnish with cilantro.
- Step 4: Serve with tortilla chips or crackers. See more serving suggestions below.
How to Store Leftover Taco Dip
Transfer remaining dip to an airtight container, place a piece of plastic wrap directly over the dip and smooth out any air. Cover tightly with the lid and store in your refrigerator for up to 4 days.
How to serve Taco Dip
Serve this high protein taco layer dip with tortilla chips or crackers as an appetizer or part of a larger party spread. It’s also great with pita chips and fresh vegetables.

Best Taco Dip Toppings
Toppings for this delicious dip can be customized to your personal likings. I topped my dip with lettuce, tomatoes, olives, shredded cheese, avocado or guacamole, and cilantro.
You can also add drained canned corn, cooked taco meat, black or pinto beans, diced red onions or chopped green onions, green chiles, diced bell peppers. It's up to you!
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Whole milk or low-fat cottage cheese will work best. Avoid the no fat option though. I like cottage cheese from Good Culture.
- At first, it may seem like cottage cheese is not blending very well. Be patient - start at low speed, use a tamper (if your blender has one), and keep blending, increasing the speed to medium-high until the dip is silky smooth.
- Use your favorite taco seasoning - I like my homemade mild taco seasoning recipe but store bought kinds will also work.
- If you want your dip to be spicy, add ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce before blending.
Recipe FAQs
No. Cream cheese has denser texture than cottage cheese, and cream cheese is also lower in protein and higher in fat.
Follow my Blended Cottage Cheese tutorial for perfectly smooth and creamy cottage cheese with a texture like Greek yogurt.
Yes! If you want to, you can top this dip with taco meat (chopped up chicken or ground beef) and/or drained black or pinto beans.

Cottage cheese is cheese, right? Totally makes sense. This worked much better than I thought it would.
