High Protein Chocolate Mousse with Cottage Cheese
If you’re looking for the best Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse that tastes like the real thing to satisfy your sweet tooth, look no further. This easy and kid-approved mousse recipe has a silky smooth, velvety texture and a decadent chocolate flavor thanks to real dark chocolate and quality cocoa powder. Even if you're not a fan of cottage cheese, you'll love this mousse.
But not only is this recipe delicious and so easy to make, it’s also naturally gluten-free and high in protein and fiber: Coming in at 12 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving, this chocolate protein mousse rivals my Protein Oatmeal Cookies, my Cottage Cheese Blueberry Muffins and Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bars for which healthy recipe my family loves to eat more!
Ingredient notes
- Cottage cheese - our "secret ingredient", use either full-fat cottage cheese or 2% fat cottage cheese.
- Avocado - use a ripe, soft avocado for creamy texture
- Chocolate chips - semi-sweet or dark chocolate both work well
- Cocoa powder - make sure it’s fresh for the best flavor results
- Maple syrup - I like to use real, pure maple syrup as my sweetener
- Vanilla extract - use a quality extract for the best flavoring
- Unsweetened almond milk - any milk (plant-based or dairy) will work
See recipe card below for quantities.
Instructions
Follow these easy steps to make the best, velvety chocolate mousse.
- Step 1: Place all the ingredients except chocolate chips in the bowl of a food processor.
- Step 2: Pulse several times, then blend continuously for a few minutes until the mixture is completely smooth and whipped.
- Step 3: Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl, mixing as you go until smooth and pourable.
- Step 4: Cool melted chocolate slightly and add to the cottage cheese mixture in the food processor. Blend together until completely smooth.
- Step 5: Transfer to 3 small serving containers. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to set.
- Step 6: Top with whipped cream, fresh raspberries and shaved dark chocolate or enjoy on its own.
Top tip
Make sure the mixture is super smooth and airy before you add melted chocolate. A mini food processor works really well for this recipe. Check out my blended cottage cheese tutorial for additional tips.
Serving suggestions
I like this high protein chocolate mousse with a small dollop of whipped cream, fresh raspberries and some shaved dark chocolate on top.
You can try this with other fresh fruit like blackberries or sliced strawberries or add some chopped nuts for extra taste and texture or a sprinkle of sea salt for a delicious salted chocolate mousse.
How to Store Leftover Chocolate Mousse
Transfer to an appropriately-sized airtight container without too much excess space for air. Store in the colder parts of your refrigerator and eat within 3-4 days.
Tips and Tricks
- I used dark chocolate chips but semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips will also work, depending on what you like.
- I've tested this recipe in both a mini food processor and a standup blender. While both methods produced great results, the food processor is a better choice because it's easier to achieve a smooth whipped texture and it's MUCH easier to scrape the mousse out, since you can remove the blade.
- Whole milk cottage cheese works best but 2% fat is also fine. Avoid fat free cottage cheese.
- Don't skip the milk. I found that 1 tablespoon of liquid really helps to achieve the airy, whipped consistency. If you use only cottage cheese, the mousse turns out too dense. If your cottage cheese is dry (it depends on the brand), you may want to increase the amount of milk to 2 tablespoons.
- You may need to scrape the sides of the food processor with a spatula a few times. You shouldn't be able to see any white spots or curds from the cottage cheese.
- You can use honey or agave as the liquid sweetener, but the taste will be slightly different.
- Add a touch of peppermint extract for a chocolate mint mousse.
FAQ
Yes. If you add the chocolate chips in whole, you will end up with gritty bits in your mousse.
I wouldn’t. The mousse will likely lose its silky quality once you thaw it.
No. Avocado adds some healthy fat to the mousse and helps produce the silky mousse consistency. I love using avocado in healthy chocolate desserts, such as these Avocado Brownies and my Nutella Smoothie Bowl.
Each serving of this magnificent chocolate mousse packs 12 grams of protein.
