The traditional BLT gets an avocado upgrade with this Bacon Lettuce Avocado Tomato Sandwch (or "The BLAT"). This fun twist on the classic BLT sandwich is great for avocado lovers! The addition of creamy, ripe avocado takes the classic bacon, lettuce, and tomato to whole new levels. This might just be my, and your, new favorite sandwich.

I love a good BLT, but when I added some sliced avocado to the last one I made, I was stunned how good it was! Even the kids raved about them, so I knew I had to share it with you.
The creamy avocado slices blend so well with the ripe tomatoes and thick cut bacon slices. It’s like adding a whole new element only to discover it’s what’s been missing the entire time. If you’ve never tried avocado on a BLT before, you are in for an amazing treat!
And this b.l.a.t. sandwich is as customizable as it is delicious. Add a little bean sprouts instead of or alongside the crisp lettuce for a peppery bite. Or add a little cheese and melt it in the broiler quickly before topping with the second slice of bread.

Why You’ll Love the BLAT
- The addition of avocado is a fun twist on a classic BLT sandwich
- It's a great sandwich for avocado lovers and adds a great mild flavor
- Customizable - make it just as you like it
Ingredients for BLT with Avocado
This classic sandwich recipe uses fresh, wholesome ingredients and a healthier bread and mayo option.
-
Lettuce: I like to use green leaf lettuce or Romaine lettuce. Spring mix or arugula can be substituted
-
Avocado: should be ripe for the best texture
-
Bread: I like to use Dave’s Thin Sliced Killer Bread.
-
Bacon: use high quality bacon for best results. Depending on preferences, you can go with thin or thick-cut bacon (I'm team thick!)
-
Mayo: Use a good quality mayonnaise. I like Sir Kensignton’s avocado oil mayo.
How to make the BLAT Sandwich
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, place the bacon slices on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-20 minutes, depending on how crispy you like it. (Image 1 & 2). I cooked mine for 15 minutes.
- Place the cooked pieces of bacon on paper towels to absorb excess grease.
- Spread the mayonnaise (or butter) on 4 slices of bread (Image 3 & 4).
- Place lettuce leaves, cooked bacon, tomato slices and avocado on 2 pieces of bread. Season with salt and pepper, if desired (Images 5-8). Cover with the remaining 2 pieces of bread and press lightly to help the ingredients stick.
- Cut each sandwich in half (if you want) and enjoy.
Serving suggestions
There is no shortage of ways to serve this amazing sandwich. These are just a few of my favorites.
Soup: Butternut Squash Carrot Soup, Tomato White Bean Soup, or Spicy Lentil Potato Soup. See more Healthy Soup Recipes here.
Side salad: Greek Chickpea Salad, Chopped La Scala Salad and Beet and Feta Salad
Fries and Potato chips: Air Fried Sliced Potatoes, Air Fryer Baby Potatoes , Air Fryer Carrot Fries or Butternut Squash Fries (for a healthier version)
How to store leftover sandwiches
You can store leftovers or make these sandwiches the day or night ahead and keep them in the refrigerator.
Assemble the sandwiches per instructions, then wrap them tightly in plastic and place them in the fridge until you are ready.
Tips & Tricks for a BLAT Sandwich
- Depending on your preferences, adjust bacon cooking time. 4-5 minutes per side will give you bacon that’s crisped up but still tender inside. For softer, less crispy bacon, reduce cooking time to 2-3 minutes per side. For very crispy and harder bacon slices, go with 5-6 minutes per side.
- If you like your bread toasted, you can toast it before assembling the sandwiches
- You can swap regular mayo for sriracha mayo, Gochujang aioli or dill garlic aioli
- If you want, you can mash the avocado and spread it on the sandwich instead of mayo
- Use black pepper bacon for a spicier flavor option
- Use turkey bacon for a healthier option or plant-based bacon for a vegetarian version of this sandwich
- Add some slices of grilled chicken for an even more filling sandwich
Recipe FAQs
It depends what you put on it. For a healthy and nutritious version, use whole grain bread (high in fiber), nitrate and sugar free bacon (or turkey bacon) and swap mayo for mashed avocado.
Whole wheat, whole grain, or sourdough bread are considered the healthiest bread options.
Yes! Turkey bacon will totally work for this recipe.
You can make this sandwich the day before, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in an airtight container or storage bag until the next day. I don’t really recommend letting the sandwich sit for more than a day.
